AFFORDABLE LEARNING SOLUTIONS

Thuytrang Lieu, Freshman, earning a degree in Healthcare Management is taking English 110 Freshmen Composition 1 with

Mr. John Hsiao. She explains, “Saving money on textbooks benefitted me numerous ways. First off, it really saved me a vast amount of money that can go towards my tuition, transportation, and last but not least sustenance. In addition, an advantage for me is to be able to access course information in a variety of mediums instead of using a book. I can access it anywhere and anytime as long as I have Wi-Fi or data usage on my mobile device. Whereas for the actual textbook, I would have to carry it around with me 24/7 if I want to have instant access to it.”

What’s coming in the future?

More Interactive tools that can be used for math and other subjects. It’s way beyond just textbooks! Additional grants are available for faculty who want to newly adopt free, open textbooks. Contact Naomi Moy at [email protected] for details.

Shortly there will be a Blackboard AL$ course, prepared by Reza Boroon, Academic Technology Lead. The goal is to demonstrate in a “show and tell” manner for faculty, all the AL$ resources available for them to offer in their classrooms. There are so many things that we can all do. It is just a matter of getting the information out to faculty.

“I am there for my students. Opening up access for students and building their success is why I am involved with Affordable Learning Solutions. I hope this open access movement spreads campus-wide.”

-Mr. John Hsiao

Mr. John Hsiao teaches English 108 Freshmen Composition Stretch and English 110 Freshmen Composition. He has 68 students and has saved each student $40, a total class savings of $2,720 using online and PDF materials. Mr. Hsiao states, “Students know that they can get most everything for free; movies, music, news, and why not texts as well! They are excited for it as it is another expense that they do not have to worry about.”
