Naomi shared the 2014-15 Academic Year Savings at the CSUDH Bookstore. Naomi and Will Crawford, Campus Store Manager have been working hard together negotiating with vendors, publishers and sharing information with each other to get the prices down for faculty and students. Naomi beamed, “It’s a totally cooperative project.” There are a large number of faculty involved with the CSUDH Bookstore initiatives. Ellen Junn, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs is a strong advocate of Open Educational Resources (OER). As part of AL$, she has worked closely with the Campus Bookstore in a collaborative effort to help students become aware of free library book options. The Campus bookstore has agreed to place a sign next to each book that is available as a free e-book from the Library which reads, “The University Library has a free e-book version of this textbook available on-line 24/7. Ask a Reference Librarian for assistance or visit: csudh.edu/library/.”

Negotiating Lower Cost Textbooks at the CSUDH Bookstore

Report Developed by R. Will Crawford III, Campus Store Manager for CSUDH

The CSU is especially interested in promoting Open Educational Resources (OER) to reduce costs to students and there will be more opportunities as the academic year progresses. “Many of our faculty are already using open education resources.” Naomi explains. All faculty are encouraged to contact Naomi Moy at [email protected] as she will keep a record of your OER’s in use for the classroom for reporting purposes to the CSU. But most importantly, Naomi states, “Her goal is to provide open access ‘free materials’ that are available, to all our faculty and students.”

AFFORDABLE LEARNING SOLUTIONS

In addition, each semester Naomi sets-up a booth in front of the Library manned with iPads and staff during the first week of class for several hours each day to promote AL$ and to show how students can get to their free e-books. “The students were quite excited when they heard that!” said Naomi. All these efforts are really paying off for students!
