Social Media:
The Great
Enticement
In response to Homer’s The Odyssey
Social media,
The great enticement,
Causes face to face communication to dwindle,
Taking over my life,
Gripping me,
Like the sirens calling out to Odysseus.
You too should be cautious,
For social media is a snare,
Like Charybdis.
Don’t be pulled in
Because once you are,
There is no turning back.
Many lurk behind a screen,
For it is easier to connect this way,
Not in person.
This mode of communication is an addicting challenge to overcome.
The constant use of phones is a habit,
I know.
I always have my iPhone in hand,
It is a new appendage on my body,
Now part of me.
Unfocused and distracted,
Are some results of the great temptation that I succumb to hourly.
Seconds turn into minutes and
Minutes turn into hours,
The way the time Odysseus spent in Circe’s house passed quicker than it seemed.
Social media blocks me,
Holds me back
Like being trapped in the Cyclops cave.
Struggling and yearning for freedom.
