Freemasonry and the Revolution in Latin America,

by Dr. David Harrison.

Read by Frederic and Elena.

This month we celebrate the Independence of the United States and curiously enough in July several countries in Latin America also celebrate their Independence: Venezuela, the 5th; Argentina, the 9th; Colombia, the 20th; and Peru, the 28th. The ideal of freedom spread throughout the American Continent from 1776 onwards and resonated across the world in the French Revolution of 1789 and throughout Latin America in the 19th century.

Less known is the link among the founding fathers of the nascent Republics of the Americas. The ideals of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity espoused by the likes of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Lafayette, Simon Bolivar, Jose de San Martin, Bernardo O’Higgins, Francisco Miranda, Jose Marti, Francisco de Paula Santander, and so many others, are just the expression of their belonging to the ancient Fraternity of Freemasonry. Yes, they were all freemasons.
