I never looked for the American dream,

the american dream found me

By Magda Tporo,

New American Citizen

A dramatic experience on a personal level brought me from Colombia to the Hudson Valley. 8 years ago, after a divorce, I decided to temporarily leave my country of origin and dedicate myself, along with my daughter Paula, to learn a new language. I traveled in the fall of 2009 to visit my sister who lives in Rosendale NY. While studying English, I realized that the lifestyle of this area motivated me and was in line with my life expectations. So, while Paula grew up in love with this country, I prepared myself to validate my career as a medical technologist, and in doing so I obtained my license to work. This way, the years went by and from a 6-month language study plan I went on to become an American citizen in 2018. Only when you live here you do measure the degree of opportunities offered by the United States. Today, at the age of 43, I feel fulfilled in all aspects of my life.

On February 9th of 2018, 52 immigrants became American citizens in Kingston NY, Magda Toro is one of them and she told us her story...
