General Taheri is Soraya's Father but they don't really enjoy a close or intimate relationship. The General also has a strong relationship with Amir and they discuss the fledgling relationship and Amir's career together. He and Baba shared a friendship and mutual respect from their esteemed positions in Afghanistan and through their regular meetings in the flea market. He and Jamila are husband and wife, it is however clear that the General acts in a dictatorial manner when discussing issues that affect them both such as the wedding of their daughter.

He regularly uses the word "Bachem" when speaking to Amir which denotes his superiority over them and can be construed as demeaning because it translates as "my child". On some occasions, it is used as a term of endearment.

He uses a lot of compound and complex sentences which is to be expected from a man of his prestigious place in Afghan Society. The General has an insatiable desire to reminisce and recollect his time in Afghanistan which leads to a number of side sequences in his conversations. The General is clearly very careful with the words that he uses because he is able to communicate his feelings without letting slip the veneer of an esteemed citizen and a diplomat.
