One thing I find very useful when doing the minutes is asking the president for the agenda of the meeting the night before, and putting it in the document that I am going to type my minutes in. From there, I start typing what goes on in the minutes, using the agenda as headings to keep all my thoughts organized and collected.

Another tip that I have for all those taking minutes for the first time is to not worry about spelling mistakes. Those can always be edited later, but you usually cannot rewind the meeting to find lost information!

Finally, I find it helpful if you include some light humor in your minutes! It will keep you and everyone reading engaged, and just adds a lighter tone to the serious matters recorded in the minutes.

As with everything else in life, practice makes perfect! While each secretary takes minutes in a unique and specialized way, this article hopefully provided you with some methods or ideas that you might find useful when you take your minutes.
