TYSON FOODS is known as a leading protein producer, but it offers
far more than chicken. Its many brands include Ball Park, Hillshire
Farm, Jimmy Dean and Mexican Original. At the company’s
Mexican Original plant in Fayetteville, team members produce a
variety of tortillas, chips, taco shells, wraps and flatbreads.
Nathan Low is an industrial refrigeration technician at the Mexican
Original plant. He’s also worked as an industrial maintenance
mechanic. Both careers are important in food production and other
types of manufacturing, and people with the right training can earn
a good income. Industrial maintenance mechanics keep high-
tech equipment running by performing maintenance and repairs.

Refrigeration technicians operate ammonia refrigeration systems to
keep all parts of the plant at the proper temperatures for making and
storing products safely. There is a shortage of people who have the
skills and training needed for both jobs.
Low says this career fits him because he likes working with his hands
and solving problems. He credits one of his teachers at the Career
Academy of Siloam Springs with helping him find his calling. “Our
teacher took us on tours, so we could see all the jobs available and
different settings we could work in,” he explains. “One of the places
we visited was Tyson, and they told us they really needed people in
industrial maintenance.”
