Originally issued in instalments in Punch Magazine between 1888 and 1889 it pretends to be the rather pompous diary of Charles Pooter, a middleclass Victorian of great moral fibre who is (even by Victorian standards) a bit of a ‘stuffed shirt’. He writes, in the footsteps of Samuel Pepys, about every trvial detail of his daily life. The result is a warm and funny insight into England in the 19th Century. A tongue-incheek story when it first written, over a hundred years ago, it still epitomises the dry English humour that characterised Punch Magazine.
