What is a professional reader? Mine must be one of the best jobs in the world …never being short of something to read. Admittedly, one can’t choose whatever appeals from a varied list but, as long as an honest opinion is submitted, an uninteresting book can be put aside; the next one on the list could be thrilling. If I admit that I am more likely to enjoy a murder mystery than a romantic novel, don’t imagine that my report would be biased in any way – good writing is always recognisable and plots should make sense, whatever the genre. If, at the end of my reading, I can say that the everything except the story was good, it is obvious that the publisher will have to check with other readers to discover whether they agree. I am always very much aware that the authors (anonymous to me) could be pinning their hopes on being accepted for publication.
