So it doesn't all end with the rider. There are proposals, that will go for further discussion, to revamp the way instructors are qualified to make the process more unified and ensure that the quality of instructors and instruction improves with accreditation schemes for the top performing schools.

That will mean increased scrutiny of training schools and should in the end make it easier for a prospective rider to identify the quality training providers and trust that they are going to get the best instruction available for their money.

Depending on your view of all things political, with the government engaged in the daily running of the country, getting through the process that is Brexit and dealing the seemingly endless stream of crises and fiasco's that adorn the daily papers we would doubt that any of this is going to be thrust to the fore as a top priority so we may not hear of or see any changes until sometime mid-late 2018.

Mark Winn, DVSA Head of Rider and Vocational Policy said “With these proposals, we’re trying to make motorcycling safer. We want to improve the standard of training people receive, as too many young riders are killed on the roads. As a biker myself, I don’t want too many barriers to rider, or hoops to jump through but we want to modernise the training riders receive."

We'll have to wait and see what the financial impact of the changes will be for riders and instructors but any small increase is well worth the added knowledge and skills that are being proposed.
