Welsh Road Racing Begins in 2018

One particularly enthusiatic group of guys at Motorcycle Live last week were from the newly formed Eppynt Welsh TT Ltd.

Their baby is the Welsh Road Race series that kicks off in August 2018 around the hills and roads of Sennybridge Training Area & the Brecon mountains, an area that many an ex-serviceman like ourselves will know well!

The throught of retuning to Sennybridge would fill anyone with dread but for a spectacle such as a professionally organised road race it is a must!

And don't think that this is the first TT style race in Wales.

Oh no, the first Welsh TT was in 1922. That race was held at Pendine Sands. The main event was held over a distance of 100 miles in atrocious weather conditions and was eventually won by Capt. Clarence P. Wood MC, on a 596cc Scott Squirrel.

The Eppynt Motor Cycle Road Races was revived in 1948, under the auspices of Builth Wells & Carmarthen Motor Clubs, following a period of austerity after the second world war.

It was held on War Department property near Sennybridge, which became the Eppynt road race circuit, named after Mynydd Eppynt, on which it is situated.

The lap record of 70.65mph was set by .T. Barnett on a 350cc Norton during the 1950 Junior Race.
