Q: Should I take a vitamin for my eye?
I see vitamins advertised in the
grocery store and in the pharmacy
to promote eye health.
A: For most people, there is no evidence
showing a benefit to taking a vitamin for
the eye. It is therefore not recommended
for most people. However, for people with
intermediate to advanced age-related
macular degeneration (ARMD), there is a
specific vitamin combination that can be
helpful. The specific vitamin combination
was researched in the Age-Related Eye
Disease Study (AREDS) 1 and 2. It is
available without a prescription in most
grocery stores and pharmacies and contains
Vitamin C, Vitamin E, lutein, xeaxanthin,
zinc, and copper.
Q: How do I know if I should take an
eye vitamin?
A: First, your ophthalmologist should perform
a dilated eye exam to evaluate your retina for
signs of age-related macular degeneration.
If there are intermediate or advanced ARMD
changes present, your ophthalmologist will
likely recommend taking an eye vitamin
that has the AREDS2 study formulation.
