LETTER FROM THE EDITOR A fter one of the longest winters we have had in the Capital Region in a long time, this season will feel even sweeter and I’m excited to share this issue with our loyal readers. It’s the time of year that represents a spring in our step, a new sense of happiness and the chance to soak up the sun and warmth during these longer days. When I think about summer I think about the summers I spent vacationing with my family, so many years ago, and the more recent memories I’m creating with my family now. I’m reminded of the NJ shore, Cape Cod, Maine, Long Island, Newport Rhode Island and countless others. Each one holds a special memory for me. There is something about being on a beach staring at the ocean, taking in the sounds and salty air smell that resonates deeply with me. The ocean is truly a magical place. It’s as if times stands Me, headed to the beach at age 4 still for me when I am near an ocean. It’s Still Paradise; Bermuda (page 10), reminds me of exploring new beaches. I hope you enjoy learning about this island’s rich history and charm. Only a short flight from NY makes it a very doable vacation, and one that I will include on my list of places to visit. It is another example of a place where you can feel time standing still. Learn how to grow an herb garden this season (page 20), enjoy the joy of motorcycle riding (page 32) and read how a senior move specialist can help ease the transition of moving. (page 38) Enjoy this time of year, wake up early to watch a sunrise, take a road trip to a beach and stop to listen to the ocean… you’ll be glad you did. – Alison Michael JUNE IS 1 Memory loss that disrupts daily life 6 New problems with words in speaking or writing 2 Challenges in planning or solving problems things and losing the ability to 7 Misplacing retrace steps 3 Difficulty completing familiar tasks 8 Decreased or poor judgment 4 Confusion with time or place 9 Withdrawal from work or social activities understanding visual images and spatial 5 Trouble relationships 10 Changes in mood and personality If you or a loved one is experiencing one or more of these warning signs, contact Alzheimer’s Association of Northeastern NY: 518.867.4999 | 24-Hour Helpline: 800.272.3900 | alz.org/northeasternny | 4 Pine West Plaza, Suite 405, Albany 8 55PlusLivingGuide.com
