PRINTPACK INDIA 2019 SHOW DAILY 2 February 2019 | Supported by Indian Printer & Publisher and Packaging South Asia 15 Growing acceptance of carbon fiber rollers Carbon Light bags two consecutive orders from Pelican for CF rollers Harish Penumarthi D elhi-NCR based Carbon Light is a manufacturer of carbon fib- er composite rollers that it sup- plies to the packaging, paper and film, mining, printing, rubber, food and other industries. Carbon fiber possesses strik- ing features like high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, electrical conductivity, high thermal conductivity and high tensile strength, among others. Around six months back, the company ventured into the non-woven segment and has already catered to nearly 10 to 15 customers, most of whom have re- placed their old, worn-out rollers with brand new carbon fiber rollers. Carbon Light supplies rollers to these companies for carding, winding and cross lapper machines. To add to this breakthrough, the company also bagged two consecutive orders from one of India’s largest flexible packag- ing printing machine manufacturers, Pelican. One shipment consisting of 50 rollers has already been delivered to Pelican in December while the second one is likely to be dispatched by the end of January. The rollers supplied to Peli- can are anti-static, highly conductive and abrasion resistant. Static elimination from the roll- ers repels dust and removes other un- wanted particles from their surface. The coating used on the rollers allow greater conductivity and help dissipate the electric charge. Soon after the initial testing phase in August, Pelican imme- diately placed an order for 50 more roll- ers to Carbon Light. Apart from supplying to Pelican, the company is also working with Ka- bra extrusions, for its blown film lines, and Excel Plastics, which makes plastic pouches and packaging bags. Similar is the case with Galaxy Paktek based in Greater Noida. With the help of the rollers supplied by Carbon Light, Gal- axy Paktek has been able to increase the efficiency of its machines significantly. A lot of rollers in the machine are very sensitive to reciprocating motion. The dancer rollers in the packaging ma- chines are made to reciprocate. In that case, the entire speed of the machine is limited to the momentum of the roll- ers. The carbon fiber rollers in this case have been successful in increasing the speed of the machine by at least 25%. In case of an emergency or fault in the film, a machine needs to be shut down immediately in order to avoid film wastage. In such a scenario, it takes a lot of time for the machine to stop, which in turn results in wastage of the film as the roller continues to wrap the film due to the presence of inertia of motion in the rollers. Usually, rollers control the speed of the line but while decelerating, due to high moment of inertia, it takes a long time for the rollers to decelerate. In such applications, these light-weight, carbon fiber rollers have proved to be extremely efficient in curbing wastage and helping track the error easily. “We’ve recently expanded. We are building our new production plant on an 8,500 square meters newly procured land to support our ongoing projects and upcoming business. We’re always order hungry and that is the reason why we have expanded. We anticipate carbon fiber to be a success in the near future and hence are making sure we’re ready to supply to as many customers as possible,” says Anuj Bansal, techni- cal manager of Carbon Light. An order for two machines for the new manu- facturing plant is in the pipeline. Each machine takes about 8 to 10 months to arrive. The company also has plans to buy a new 4.5-meter long grinder by the end of January. “In India, the only ones who are aware of carbon fiber rollers are the ones who are already using it—the end users. Whereas, the OEMs are still us- ing aluminum. A handful of companies use carbon fiber in their original ma- chines. Being one of the growth driv- ers in the Indian packaging sector, these companies understand the importance of these rollers and are also aware of the advantages that these rollers bring along with them. We hope that these companies will help spread awareness about the importance of carbon fiber rollers,” Bansal concludes. Technology solutions for print quality perfection Eliminate defects.
