On Independence Day in College Park, Maryland, and event took place that was anything but a celebration of freedom and liberty. Police Chief Alan Goldberg of nearby Takoma Park, Maryland, had been furniture shopping in Ikea with his daughter for 2 hrs. when an employee approached him and informed him that Ikea had a no firearms policy and that he would have to either leave or lock his gun in the car, as reported by Mike Opelka, editor-at-large, of the Blaze.

“Goldberg chose not to lock his weapon in the car and left the store instead, then shared his experience on Facebook afterward,” reports Opelka.

According to the Opelka, Gold berg said that walking around the store with an empty holster wasn’t “the most prudent thing to do”.

Ikea, apologized for the incident and explained that their “weapons free” policy does not apply to law enforcement officers. Ikea also indicated that they would be taking steps to ensure that their employees understood the policy correctly.

The local news which reported on the incident also interviewed several individuals about their views on firearms in stores. While all three individuals did agree that they did not like the idea of firearms in stores, they also all agreed that there should be an exception for police officers.
