I realized that in my daily routine I had become so accustomed to carrying a firearm that a simple shift in my morning routine caused me to forget. One would think that sitting in the driver seat of my vehicle, right hip against a console while I put my seatbelt on would have reminded me I forgot. The fact that it did not reminded me, the highly trained observer and certified instructor, that I had become unaware.

At the minimum, the moment we choose to holster and carry a gun concealed we should consciously elevate our level of awareness to condition yellow. A state of awareness that is not overly stressful to maintain, makes each of us a less appealing victim, as well as an alive and valuable witness should a crime occur nearby.

While aware of our surroundings and cognizant of those around you, a potential threat is easier to identify and elevating your situational awareness comes naturally. Often times and I mention this in every class; your life and others may depend on your level of awareness. And getting comfortable in your routines, carrying a gun or not, makes you a more attractive victim. So lets elevate our level of awareness together and remind ourselves that not only being a less attractive victim deters the criminal element, elevated awareness could possibly help you avoid a violent confrontation. As the saying goes, “the best way to win a violent confrontation is to avoid a violent confrontation! I enjoyed writing this article and am more aware and alert during and after writing.
