HOME DISCOVERY
Creative use of niches turn the dining room (top) into an art gallery,
while the kitchen and guest bath (above, left respectively) share a
visual flair that defines this home.
For example, the steel and glass ladder effect entering the
foyer is mimicked in the staircase windows all the way up
to the third floor. It leaves you with a feeling of wanting to
climb even higher in this home. The view of the ocean is
spectacular throughout the ascent to the main living level of
this unique house.
There are no square rooms in this ultra contemporary
home and the use of wall space is both functional and
tremendously creative. Niches within the walls at the top
of the stairway are the perfect venue for three dimensional
art the Craigs have collected throughout the years. Arriving

at the second level, a visitor will find themselves in a dining
room area that wraps around a hallway and then opens into
an expansive living space. Contemporary lighting and a glass
fireplace set the tone for the contemporary furnishings.
The luminescent mosaic tiles of the fireplace in the living
room compliment the French Royal Blue accents found in the
kitchen. The kitchen is a study in form and function.
“Since I have come to Hilton Head, I realized how much
I enjoyed cooking,” said Skeeter. “It is an unbelievable room
to cook in; even my outside grill right off the kitchen gives
me a view of the water.”
Skeeter had quite a bit to do with the design of the kitch-
en, even deciding he would go to Brazil to find the perfect
granite if need be. Luckily, it was found stateside and the
magnificent blue granite in the kitchen has been designed
as though it were a piece of art with different levels and
functions. Contemporary stools and accessories complete the
look of this high tech kitchen.
Throughout the Craig home, textures and materials
are woven very effectively. The bamboo floors can be seen
throughout the body of the house while cork floors are
a practical and easy-to-stand-on solution for the kitch-
en. “Bamboo is such a hard material indigenous to the
Lowcountry and so practical,” described Shirley. “Skeeter
and I couldn’t resist using it in this home.”
“This level is where we do most of our living,” said
Skeeter. “And when we are not enjoying the ocean, we come
into the office media room and work or read or just relax.”
The media room boasts built in shelving wall to wall, as well
as incredible wooden narrow doors adorned with hardware
