/ 202 INSPIRATIONAL MOMS / for her BY Monica Avila Courtney Barclay: Soaring Legal Eagle Dedicated City Prosecutor Determined to Keep Gilbert Safe for Families Spend some time chatting with Courtney Barclay and you will learn a few things about balance. As a professional, a mother and a wife, she is proof that you really can do it all. Courtney Barclay is one of the city of Gilbert’s Assistant City Prosecutors, a position she describes as her dream job. She also is the mother of two-year-old Finley and is expecting her second baby in August. How does she juggle her high profile career and family so well? According to Courtney, “I’m lucky because my husband, Mike, is amazing.” She also credits a wonderful family support system. Her mother takes care of little Finley when Courtney is working, and with her entire family nearby, she is quick to explain that, “my eight siblings are all here in Gilbert, so my daughter is never without someone to love her and give her attention.” This seems to be a key to her balancing career and family so well, having people who provide love and support and are there to help her be the best you can be. For Courtney Barclay, this solidifies her choice to be a prosecuting attorney. “I have always wanted to have a career where I could help someone in some way,” Courtney says. She’s doing just that in her position with the city of Gilbert., viewing the prosecutor’s role not as a punisher but as an advocate for victims. “I feel like the prosecutor has the opportunity to impact the system on a larger scale as the voice of the victims,” Courtney explains. “Victims are the people who the crime has happened to but they really don’t have any say in what happens in trial. It’s my job to make sure that they are heard and given the opportunity to see someone is fighting for the outcome they want.” Courtney certainly works tirelessly toward helping keep Gilbert safe. Surely, being a mom and such a family-oriented person helps, as does her charity-minded background. As a college student, Barclay worked with teens in the Young Life Outreach ministry. This background in a faithbased program helped ground her and allowed her to see that giving back to the community is essential. Career and motherhood can often be a tough balancing act, but Courtney Barclay seems to have mastered it and does it all with flair, compassion and success. 36 202 MAGAZINE \ JULY 2012 \ 202magazine.com
