3-D Printing
Mark Tan
CONCEPT
Discover how to print three-
dimensional objects of your own design using
CAD drafting software and PLA 3-D printers.
In this exploratory workshop, students learn to
model 3-D objects using CAD Drawing software
and how to output to 3-D printers. Students
work individually as they explore 3-D printing as
a tool and as a singular artistic process. Students
make a customized box, an animated character
with moving features and a piece of wearable
jewelry.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
Students begin
with ideas and sketches, then discuss potential
projects and begin fundamental CAD drawings
of objects to be 3-D printed. Knowledge of CAD
drawing is suggested but not required.
ACTIVITIES
Demonstrations, discussions
and instruction are given each morning and
afternoon. Students are then introduced to
the material and process to provide insight for
3-D-printed projects. Throughout the week,
project intentions are discussed then brought
to life in our 3-D printing facility, the “FabLab”.
