July 15 — 19 | 9AM — 3PM July 22 — 26 | 9AM — 3PM August 5 — 9 | 9AM — 3PM Teen Mixed Media Photography for Teens Yana Payusova Kinetic & Interactive Sculpture: intro to Arduino CONCEPT CONCEPT Chelly Jin Learn how to combine images and words into hybrid works of art that provoke the viewer and tell a story. Students explore various collage techniques and mixed-media approaches. These could include direct overlays (such as affixing photographic imagery to canvas and painting over it), or inscribing words and/or images across the surface of paintings, drawings, or sculpture. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students explore cut-and-paste photographic collage, digital collage, graffiti stenciling, growing and scanning bacteria, drawing and painting with ink and watercolors directly on photographic imagery. Students have ample studio time, and engage in in-process critiques as well as image presentations. ACTIVITIES Demonstrations are followed by hands-on experimentation. Each day includes group discussions, digital and painting demonstrations, exercises, one-on-one help and plenty of time to create in the studio. FACULTY Yana Payusova was born in Leningrad, USSR. Classically trained as a painter at the St. Petersburg Fine Art Lyceé, she later immigrated to the United States. She received an MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Yana’s paintings and sculptures blend the styles and symbols of folk art, Russian icons, graphic poster art, illustration and comics, and reflect her cultural heritage and her training in traditional Russian realist painting. Yana exhibits both nationally and internationally. She currently teaches at the University of Arizona. www.payusova.com Explore the exciting world of Arduino, where code and tangible media intertwine. In this workshop, students are introduced to basic electronics and programming using the Arduino platform, while applying these skills into dynamic sculptural creations. The limitless possibilities of developing code and mechanics are examined. These tools are not only approachable, but can be remade into anything from our imagination. Participants rethink applications of the technology, apply an interdisciplinary approach to art making, and are inspired by a sense of wonder. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students explore various ways to integrate Arduino mechanics with paper sculpture to craft kinetic and interactive work, be it in the form of still sculpture, mobile sculpture or wearables. Begin with creating interactive mechanics using code, an Arduino Uno, sensors and LED lights. Then, students design the sculptural element using various treatments of paper (folding, mâché, painting). We then explore ways to bring these two together to make physically moving and interactive work. ACTIVITIES There are demonstrations, followed by hands-on experimentation. Students receive tech demos and participate in group discussions and brainstorm exercises. Each student works on an individual project with one-on-one help from faculty and staff. FACULTY Chelly Jin is a designer and artist based in Los Angeles whose work synthesizes data, technology and art to illustrate narratives through interaction and creative research. She received her BA from the University of California, Los Angeles in Design Media Art. www.chellyj.in Conor King CONCEPT Nurture passion for photography through an atmosphere of exploration, practice and play in this dynamic workshop. Students examine how great photographs engage us visually, emotionally and intellectually. Image- making abilities are improved by focusing on both the technical aspects of a photograph and the ideas behind it. Participants work on storytelling, capturing the environment and digital image creation using Adobe Photoshop. Techniques to take better and more unique photos are discussed. Students learn to edit in Adobe Photoshop, retouch photos and discover ways to combine, blend and mix photographs together as well as view and discuss important photographs from the past and present. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students use a digital camera with manual exposure capabilities and a tripod as well as Adobe Photoshop to edit, process and combine images. There are excercises outside in the natural environment and in the studio with controlled lighting as well as on green screen. ACTIVITIES Students learn digital camera functions, shooting skills and image processing. Students increase their knowledge of contemporary photography with in-class demonstrations, hands-on computer instruction and daily indoor and outdoor shooting projects. FACULTY Conor King received his MFA from Pratt Institute. He has been a member of the art faculty at several colleges and universities since 2009, including the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has shown his work nationally and internationally, has been a resident artist at RedLine Denver, and served on the board at the Colorado Photographic Arts Center, where he also assisted with exhibition development. Conor is a founding member of Tank Studios, where his studio is currently located. www.conorking.com TUITION $575 TUITION $575 TUITION $575 REGISTRATION FEE $25 | STUDIO FEE $75 REGISTRATION FEE $25 | STUDIO FEE $75 REGISTRATION FEE $25 | STUDIO FEE $75 CODE P0716-19 ENROLLMENT LIMIT 10 CODE P0819-19 ENROLLMENT LIMIT 10 CODE P1026-19 ENROLLMENT LIMIT 10 96 | andersonranch.org | 970/923-3181 [email protected] |
