Art: process &
materials II
Carl Reed III
CONCEPT
This workshop offers an
alternative to the notion that art begins with a
concept. Students explore how materials and
marks made by tools can stimulate the intellect
and lead to viable creative ideas. Practitioners
of Zen are encouraged to understand
that contemplation can consist of “cutting
firewood and carrying water”. Open-minded
experimentation with tools and materials
reveals many new and exciting concepts to take
home for future exploration and development.
MEDIA
& TECHNIQUES Students
investigate a variety of hand and power tools
and a broad range of media in a series of
sequential exercises. The aim is to learn new
skills, hone existing abilities and consider the
myriad ways that materials can play critical roles
in visual expression.
ACTIVITIES
There are illustrated talks,
technical demonstrations, hands-on practice
and individual meetings to assess the previous
day’s work and plan the most productive
current activity. Although the emphasis is
on independent work, periodic reviews are
scheduled as needed to address issues related
to the entire group.
FACULTY
Carl Reed is a sculptor and
professor emeritus at Colorado College. His
sculpture ranges from gallery-scaled pieces
to large, site-specific public projects. He is
particularly interested in the expressive capacity
of materials, and often combines stone, wood,
metal and concrete. His work has been exhibited
nationally and in Sweden.
