Pushing Image into
Form: from two to
three dimensions
Letha Wilson
CONCEPT Experiment with ways to represent
and invoke our surroundings. Students use an
interdisciplinary format that embraces painted
or photographic images, physical layers, non-
traditional art materials and sculptural forms.
The role of observation is explored, as well
as new ways to incorporate shadow, color,
surface and texture. Participants discover
playful
ways
to
embark
upon
new
relationships between two-dimensional and
three-dimensional elements and reconcile
experiences with vision. Representational
imagery is a point of entry for work that
leads further into removal, obstruction and
abstraction.
MEDIA
& TECHNIQUES Students
embrace an interdisciplinary approach to
painting including painting, collage, sculpture,
photography and drawing. Support materials
such as paper, canvas, wood panels and
found objects are also introduced. There
are techniques of image transfer, mounting
and building from flat materials presented in
the workshop.
ACTIVITIES
Daily discussions include
presentations, group and one-on-one critiques
and conversation. Specific exercises promote
new ways of looking. Individual studio time is
balanced with dialog and group conversation
and is flexible with each artist’s needs. Artists
are invited to bring their own ideas, projects
and images.

Accumulation: the multiple

CONCEPT One object can quickly multiply into a field, changing its meaning and implications. In
this workshop, students learn to quickly cast multiples of any object for applications in sculpture and
installation. Participants investigate the notions of the singular and the plural as well as the original
and the copy. Students leave with at least two molds, cast objects and the models and sample
components for large-scale installations.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
Students make basic plaster and rubber molds and have the
opportunity to cast multiples from these molds in variety of materials, including plaster, wax and
resin. Other mold-making and casting techniques are discussed and demonstrated. Students also
learn basic maquette-making techniques to depict installations.
ACTIVITIES Activities include lectures and group discussions on: the concepts of the singular and
the plural; the original and the copy; and the placement, composition and logistics of installation
art. There are daily technical demonstrations on model and mold-making as well as independent
work time.
