Augmented Sculpture:
mixed-media sculpture
& installation Make/ReMake: exploring
creativity through
sculpture & drawing
Ali Momeni Travis Townsend
MEDIA conceived idea, it has the chance to be more
interesting and unexpected. This workshop
teaches multiple approaches to the creation
and surfacing of constructed wooden volumes
and linear three-dimensional “sketches” using
wood, paper, drawing media and paint as
expressive media. Through drawing exercises
and direct techniques in wood, students make
forms, then elaborate and/or reconstruct these
forms. Come ready to draw, discuss, invent,
build, paint, rebuild and rework. Work is as
weird or imaginative as the student desires.
CONCEPT
This workshop focuses on mixed-
media techniques that combine sculpture and
installation with video projection and controlled
lighting. Students are encouraged to bring their
own sculptural and installation practice into the
workshop and to experiment with augmenting
this practice with light. Participants gain
exposure to software environments for rapid
prototyping of projection mapping content,
as well as electronic techniques for nuanced
control of lighting for sculptural purposes.
& TECHNIQUES Students
work with microcontrollers, lighting, and
rapid prototyping projection and electronics
in conjunction with other media to better
understand utilizing this technology to create
dynamic and responsive installations and works.
ACTIVITIES
Students learn methods for
integrating video projection and controlled
lighting into their own studio practices. There
is also experimentation with microcontroller
technologies, simple circuits, projections,
and LED lighting to achieve atmospheric and
directed effects. The workshop is structured to
offer plenty of time for experimentation, group
discussion, and one-on-one instruction.
FACULTY
Ali Momeni was born in Isfahan
(Iran) and immigrated to the United States at the
age of twelve. He studied physics and music at
Swarthmore College and completed his doctoral
degree in music composition, improvisation and
performance with computers from the Center
for New Music and Audio Technologies at UC
Berkeley. Momeni Founded the ArtFab lab at
Carnegie Mellon University, and has served
as an assistant professor at various institutions
around the US. Ali has exhibited work nationally
and internationally.
CONCEPT If artwork can get beyond the initial
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
Students learn
woodworking techniques to create linear and
volumetric forms, basic joinery and numerous
expressive approaches to sculpting with wood
and mixed media. There are discussions and
strategies presented for introducing color and
imagery into work.
ACTIVITIES
Technical demonstrations in
woodworking and drawing are presented as
well as group and one-on-one instruction and
discussion. There is also plenty of time to make,
re-make and collaborate.
FACULTY Travis Townsend has presented his
wood and mixed-media sculptures in numerous
solo and group exhibitions and been included
in the publications New American Paintings,
Manifest International Drawing Annual and The
Penland Book of Woodworking. He received his
MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University
and teaches at Eastern Kentucky University.

Sculpture: clay,
wood & steel II
Trey Hill
CONCEPT
Explore new materials and
approaches to working with clay. Learn to
combine different materials to create successful
ceramic and mixed-media sculptures. Discover
how adding different materials such as steel,
wood, and found objects to your work adds
layers of information and complexity. This
dynamic studio environment gives you access
to new materials and new ways of thinking.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
Students build
ceramic objects using selected imagery
and work to incorporate other built and
found objects. Review different building
techniques including large-scale coil, slab and
solid construction. Demonstrations include
multiple ways of hand building, introductory
woodworking, metalworking and surface
treatments for ceramic sculpture.
ACTIVITIES
The first week of the workshop
takes place in the ceramics studio and moves
to the sculpture studio during the second week.
Demonstrations, lectures, group discussions
and one-on-one mentorship occur. Each
new technique and materials demonstration
demystifies the material and process with an
emphasis on safety and experimentation.
FACULTY
Trey Hill is a professional sculptor
and Associate Professor at the University of
Montana where he teaches both ceramics and
sculpture. He received his BFA from Bowling
Green State University and his MFA from
San Jose State University. His work has been
shown in galleries and museums nationally
and internationally. Trey has participated in
numerous national and international artist
residencies.
