David Ellsworth, Ash Pot Michael Hosaluk, As the Crow Flies Curt Theobald, Three Amigos August 12 — 16 IV Master Class: woodturning August 19 — 23 David Ellsworth Woodturning without Borders: unusual objects CONCEPT CONCEPT Develop new dimensions and possibilities in your woodturning under the guidance of a woodworking master. This dynamic workshop introduces David Ellsworth’s distinctive style in making open bowls and hollow forms. By examining the full range of his style, students produce open bowls and hollow forms while simultaneously refining existing techniques and learning new ones. A wider understanding of vessel design is taught and participants learn about the ergonomics of body movements for greater working efficiency. This challenges ideas and concepts in an effort to teach about the “self” in self-expression. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students work with the versatile Ellsworth Signature gouge and hollowing tools, all of which are provided. Each student is also provided with their own high- quality lathe. The workshop is fully equipped with all the tools and accessories necessary for doing handwork off the lathe. Students are encouraged to bring digital images or actual work. ACTIVITIES The workshop begins with cut- rim and natural-edge open bowls, and progresses to hollow forms. There are demonstrations throughout the week to illustrate specific processes relative to students’ interests and the work being produced in class. Michael Hosaluk II August 26 — 30 II III Segmented Patterns: unlocking the process III IV Curt Theobald IV Here is your chance to give free rein to your own personal expression through form, construction and surface design. Students explore a range of kinetic movement in woodturning. Old and new come together in this workshop about woodturning and woodworking. This workshop focuses on playing and collaborating in the studio, while stretching the possibilities of woodturning. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students use techniques in spindle turning, vessels and containers to construct objects that defy the borders of woodturning. There are reviews of construction techniques using the lathe and woodworking machinery. Working with kiln-dried lumber and green wood for object making, participants learn to understand the concept of “addition by subtraction.” ACTIVITIES There are demonstrations and plenty of hands-on work for personal and group projects. Explore painting and finishing techniques for surface design. The workshop also includes investigation of kinetic concepts, including gears, pulleys, wheels, pivots and sliders. FACULTY David Ellsworth’s work is included in the permanent collections of 41 museums and numerous private collections worldwide. He is a Fellow and former Trustee of the American Craft Council and has received fellowship awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and the PEW Fellowship for the Arts. Michael Hosaluk is recognized internationally as one of the world’s most creative woodturners. Michael is a member of the Royal Academy of Art and Honorary Lifetime member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. He received the Saidye Prix Bronfman Award for Excellence in Craft in 2006 and the Lieutenant Governor General Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2011. His work covers a wide range of objects and materials, including functional vessels, furniture and sculptural pieces. Michael lives and has his studio in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. www.ellsworthstudios.com www.michaelhosaluk.com FACULTY CONCEPT Challenge yourself as you learn how to make segmented patterns in woodturning. Students glue multiple pieces of wood together to create visually stunning patterns and discover the mystery of segmented work by riding along a design adventure. This workshop teaches ways to improve skills and create unique and complex patterns. By the workshop’s end, students gain an understanding of unlocking patterns for segmented woodturning. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students should bring several drawings, designs, images or ideas of segmented patterns to translate and create into wood. Working with kiln-dried lumber, students learn wood movement, develop safe cutting techniques, realize the value of precise layout and planning, and gain an understanding of design concepts and assembly techniques. ACTIVITIES Students explore design concepts and build custom patterns. Studio time focuses on design, independent work time and construction of original pieces. Slide presentations offer a lecture on segmented turning as a design element. FACULTY Curt Theobald is a full-time studio woodturner living in Wyoming. Curt has lectured on segmented turning across Europe, New Zealand, and throughout North America. His work is in public and private collections worldwide, including the American Association of Woodturners, Ivinson Memorial Hospital, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Franklin G. Burrough-Simeon B.
