Lowe Betty Scarpino Peter Basil CONCEPT CONCEPT CONCEPT Discover the secrets of woodworking hand tools. This workshop is a must for those interested in making the finest woodwork and furniture. Hand tools such as planes, chisels, scrapers and marking gauges only perform well when they are tuned, sharpened and adjusted correctly. Faculty shows participants how to accomplish these tasks and more, so that working with these tools becomes a pleasure. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students work with domestic species of hard and soft wood. Sharpening planes, chisels and scrapers are reviewed. The workshop reviews using a hand plane to flatten a board straight and square, as well as marking and layout of joinery. Students put their tools to work by laying out and cutting mortise and tenons, miters and dovetail joints. ACTIVITIES Participants learn proper use of scrapers, hand saws, chisels and hand planes while cutting edge joints. Plenty of independent work time and faculty-led demonstrations and discussions are provided. FACULTY Philip C. Lowe is the owner and director of the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts and has been involved with woodworking since 1968. He is the author of many articles and is featured in videos with Fine Woodworking Magazine. His teaching experience includes ten years as an instructor at Boston’s North Bennet Street School. In 2005 Phil received the Cartouche Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, and was also was chosen in 2010 for the “Artisanship Award” bestowed by the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art. CAD drawing experience required. Explore the potential of woodcarving by transforming original ideas into an abstract sculptural object. Students use a variety of power-carving tools, techniques and methods to transform visual and conceptual ideas into wood sculpture. Design, planning and execution of power carving in solid wood by investigating line and form is presented. A variety of hardwood species are introduced; students then understand how to render blocks of wood into sculptural objects while gaining hands-on knowledge of the type of wood best suited for individual projects. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES The workshop is focused on the use of digWorking with kiln-dried lumber, rotary and reciprocating power-carving tools are emphasized under the guidance of the instructor. Adding details and texture to sculptural objects are introduced by hand carving chisels and gouges. Students experience the properties and workability of a variety of native hardwoods for wood sculpture. ACTIVITIES Students receive hands-on use of machine and power tools with an emphasis on individual projects. Technical demonstrations, presentations, group discussions and individual instruction occur. FACULTY Betty Scarpino is an internationally- recognized wood sculptor, woodturner and woodcut printmaker whose work is represented in numerous museum collections. In 2015, Betty received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Collectors of Wood Art and twice received the Creative Renewal Grant from the Indianapolis Arts Council. Expand your knowledge of CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) router machining in wood. Students take a deeper dive into CNC woodworking for the small shop, exploring programming, machining and fixturing at a more advanced level, which broadens capabilities. Students also examine ways to expand their skill set and improve final results and speed. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Instruction focuses on MasterCam programming for the CNC router; some Rhino CAD help will be available as well. Students should bring ideas for test parts, as well as three-dimensional models of parts they would like to improve. ACTIVITIES Fundamentals of CNC router programming are reviewed. Students use CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) to cut components on the CNC router. Demonstrations and hands-on instruction occur throughout the workshop. FACULTY A graduate of the School for American Crafts, Peter Basil has spent several years immersed in the world of product development and digital manufacturing, working with three five-axis industrial CNC routers in a production environment.
