CONCEPT Painting is a direct and powerful
way to start the process of letting our
subconscious lead our creative flow. Students
learn as many different ways of painting as
possible as a way of making substrates that guide
the image that follows. Using photographs,
or any available material, students build their
images letting the original acrylic painting
guide the process. Photographic processes that
apply to image-making are presented, as well
as correct cutting and adhesive procedures.
Final images are concise and specific, and most
often, as are all gifts of the subconscious, not
something seen before. CONCEPT
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students use
paint and digital images along with found
objects, organic objects and recycled art that is
preferably their own. Students are encouraged
to bring and use their own photographs or use
photos taken during the workshop. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
ACTIVITIES Demonstrations include
painting with acrylics, digital imaging and
transfer techniques, including direct paper and
inkjet transparencies. Students review layering
of images, gluing techniques, and how to use
different materials to apply the digital image
to the painted surface. Image presentations
showcase artists using these techniques. ACTIVITIES
FACULTY Holly Roberts has exhibited
nationally and internationally and published
three monographs of her work, including Holly
Roberts, Holly Roberts: Works 1989-1999 and
Holly Roberts: Works 2000-2009. FACULTY

Transferring one material to
another can be complicated and involved, or as
simple as smacking one surface down on top of
another. Students learn different approaches to
transfers and which work best to create the best
images. Starting with painted panels (acrylic)
and according to what is transferred, and what is
being transferred onto, students learn different
transfer processes: emulsion transfer, paper,
parchment paper, contact, and direct rubbing.
Students also learn the difference between laser
and inkjet transfers and when to use a paper
transfer or an emulsion transfer. Photography,
drawing and painting are incorporated.
Students use
paint and digital images along with found
objects, organic objects and recycled art.
Students are encouraged to bring their own

CONCEPT This advanced painting workshop
provides a unique opportunity to open up
your practice and push yourself to experiment.
Driven by risk-taking and chance, paintings
begin with formal, structural or linguistic
parameters. From there the direction each work
takes is up to the student. Multiple paintings
are worked on each day alongside daily group
critiques and individual discussions. Formal and
conceptual concerns are explored as the group
focuses on how these ideas can inform each
artist’s individual painting practice.
MEDIA
& TECHNIQUES Students
may work in oil and/or acrylic on canvas. If
oil paint is preferred, a fast-drying medium
such as Galkyd Lite is recommended.
Other materials to be used on canvas
are welcome.
ACTIVITIES
Students paint, critique and
discuss work every day. Painting continues
outside of class as well.
