Wet & Wild: water-
based media & methods The Complexity &
Distinctiveness of Color
Lauren Peterson Odili Donald Odita
CONCEPT CONCEPT
Realize the dynamic potential
of water-based media through abstract mark-
making and layering. In this workshop for
beginners, students explore a versatile array of
media including traditional watercolor, water-
soluble crayons, pencils and markers alongside
gouache and drawing tools. Try experimental
applications and explore substrates beyond
conventional watercolor paper to discover
the exciting possibilities of materials. Use
the vibrant combination of abstraction and
pattern with elements of representationalism to
generate complex, multi-layered compositions.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES
Students use
watercolor, inks, watercolor pencils, crayons
and markers for wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry
applications. Participants achieve a variety of
textural qualities by exploring surfaces such as
paper, Yupo, primed and unprimed panel.
ACTIVITIES
Daily demonstrations and
drawing exercises are structured to exhaust
the limitations of the media. Students develop
personal visual vocabulary through individual
studio time, group discussion and one-on-one
feedback.
FACULTY Lauren Peterson received her MFA
from Georgia State University. Her work has
been exhibited nationally and internationally
and is part of the permanent collection of the
High Museum of Art, Goya Contemporary and
the International Printing Museum. Lauren is
the Studio Coordinator of Painting, Drawing &
Printmaking at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
Color is a major signifier within
a painting; it not only contributes to mood, it
can have deep conceptual and meaningful
implications. Students in this workshop perform
studio exercises and hold discussions on
the topic of color to gain an understanding
and insight into its function within the realm
of painting. Artists make paintings with an
emphasis on color, specifically discovering new
color schemes to examine and explore color
choice and its effect within their paintings. As a
part of the workshop, the class conducts group
critiques of completed course work to better
understand the overall usage and effect of color
in the work.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES Students may use
oil, acrylic or gouache paints and any additional
materials needed to make work.
ACTIVITIES
There are exercises, discussions
and critiques as well as daily studio time and
one-on-one feedback from faculty.
