CONCEPT Develop a variety of acrylic
painting techniques ranging from the very
precise and geometric to the more spontaneous
and organic. Using these techniques, students
learn to push their paintings into new and
complex territory while also expressing a
strong voice through their work. In addition to
the exploration of hard edge painting, soft dry
brush painting and other techniques, there is
discovery in transparency, opacity and a wide
range of possibilities in color. Students are
encouraged to combine mixed-media elements
into their paintings either on the surface or
embedded in the paint. CONCEPT During this experimental and
hands-on workshop, take an in-depth look
at techniques and strategies for producing
compelling works in collage. This workshop
features both classroom exercises to encourage
exploration of demonstrated ways of working
as well as individual direction from faculty to
identify personal interests and direction within
the genre. Discover and experiment with collage
assembly techniques, investigate methods for
idea generation and learn how to talk about
artwork that is made in class. Students playfully
combine new materials and approaches to
create unique works of art. CONCEPT
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES The primary focus MEDIA MEDIA
ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES
is on acrylic painting, but also pencil, ink and
mixed-media materials. Students build multi-
layered compositions using masking tape and
stencils as well as freehand painting techniques.
Students develop paintings
comprised of both abstract and representational
imagery. Studio time is supported by daily slide
lectures on contemporary artists and daily
demonstrations.

Explore the luminous, versatile
and limitless possibilities of encaustic, a wax-
based paint, in combination with photography
and mixed media. During this workshop,
students examine their own visual vocabulary
through small, large or multi-paneled works.
Demonstrations include layering encaustic over
photographs, prints, drawings, collages, fabric
and transferring images onto an encaustic wax
surface to create intriguing works. Additional
topics include mixing encaustic paint and
media, studio safety, resisting, stenciling and
masking, encaustic tools, fusing, metal leafing,
collage and alternative techniques.
& TECHNIQUES Encaustic
techniques include choosing a substrate,
encaustic gesso/grounds, gluing papers and
prints, fusing, mixing medium, mixing encaustic
paint from oil paint, dipping prints and papers,
black-and-white and color Xerox type transfers,
and collage techniques. Surface techniques
including layering images, stencils and masks,
incising lines, oil pastels, pigment sticks and
indirect and direct transfers. Students use inks,
oil paints, gouache, watercolor and more in
combination with encaustic.
ACTIVITIES
There are experimental and
traditional
demonstrations
of
encaustic
techniques
and
photographic
printing.
Individual and group discussions also take
place, as well as image-based lectures and
individual work time.
