Illegal substances are not allowed on the IIE’s Varsity College campus at any time for any reason. Possessing, selling, donating, swapping, supplying and trading of any illegal or banned substance will automatically result in The IIE’s Varsity College pursuing criminal and disciplinary charges against such a person(s). 11.6.1 Tests and Screening If you are reasonably suspected of drug abuse, a urine or other non-invasive test may be carried out under the following circumstances: • • • • • • The test is conducted by a person of the same gender It is done in a private area and not in view of another student One witness, of the same gender as the student, is present but not in view of the student. The sample is clearly and correctly labelled with full particulars An authorised testing device is used If you test positive for an illegal drug you may face disciplinary action and criminal charges may be instituted by The IIE’s Varsity College against you • • • • Pack your belongings and move quickly and carefully to your assigned assembly point Find the evacuation route and assembly point, whether you are in a classroom or common area. All classrooms and common areas have evacuation route maps close to its exit Follow instructions by the fire marshals who will be stationed at various points across campus once the fire alarm is activated – they will direct you to your assembly point. Please remain calm and do not run during an evacuation procedure During a fire drill, should you be in a lecture venue, your lecturer ensures all windows have been closed, wait for all the students to vacate the venue, and close the venue door Once the fire marshals have confirmed it is safe to do so, you may leave the assembly point and return to your classroom or common area. 11.6 Illegal Substances • • 11.9 Emergency Procedures -First Aid The IIE’s Varsity College will not hesitate to invoke the provisions of public safety and criminal legislation and seek the support of the SAPS and/or private security to manage the presence or suspected presence of any weapon or object that could be used or threatened to be used as a weapon. The IIE’s Varsity College will periodically conduct fire drills as part of its Occupational Health and Safety mandate. In the event of a fire drill, you need to follow the below: In the event of a medical emergency, The IIE’s Varsity College has trained First Aiders. During an incident requiring first aid assistance, the matter must be reported to the campus reception or management immediately. A registered First Aider will be sent to the person needing first aid assistance. Once the First Aider is on site, bystanders will be asked to follow the instructions given by the First Aider. At no stage should a person not registered as a First Aider, attempt to assist or administer first aid. The IIE’s Varsity College campuses are weapons and dangerous object free zones. No one is allowed to carry or store a weapon or dangerous object on campus or threaten to use any item or object as a weapon. 11.8 Emergency Procedures - Fire Drills 11.5 Weapons and Dangerous Objects 11.7 Search and Seizures Searches and seizures are recognised as valid methods of ensuring the safety of the campus and may be carried out from time to time. The Principal or his or her delegate may, at random and without a warrant, search any person on campus if he or she has reasonable suspicion that such a person has a dangerous object or illegal substance in his or her possession. They may then seize any dangerous object or illegal substance and report the matter to the SAPS. The IIE’s Varsity College also reserves the right to arrange for members of an authorised substance abuse prevention or control agency such as the SAPS to conduct searches which may include the use of sniffer dogs on its campuses. • • • Clearly and correctly labelled with full particulars including: i) the name of the student in whose possession it was found ii) the time and date of the search and seizure iii) an incident reference number; iv) the name of the person who searched the student; v) the name of the witness; and vi) any other details necessary to identify the item and incident Recorded officially and submitted to the office of the Registrar Handed over to the SAPS immediately Disciplinary action will be taken against the offending student as possession and/or use of illegal substances is in violation of the Student Code of Conduct, Dispute, Grievance and Disciplinary Policy (IIE015) PREV.
