An Introduction to the
Preparatory School Music Program
“Music enhances the education of our children by helping
them to make connections and broadening the depth with
which they think and feel. If we are to hope for a society of
culturally literate people, music must be a vital part of our
children’s education.” – Yo-Yo Ma
All students at Guildford Grammar Preparatory School participate
in a classroom music education program of the highest calibre,
with the option of extending their music learning through
instrumental tuition and participation in choirs and music
ensembles. The classroom music program is guided by the
Kodály philosophy and the Orff Schulwerk approach.
Starting at Kindergarten, students receive 2-3 music lessons
per fortnight. Music is introduced to the younger students in
an imaginative, supportive and inspiring way. The students are
encouraged to respond through imitation, guided listening,
creative performance and movement.
Music lessons are designed to engage the mind and the body.
Over the eight years of music tuition in the Preparatory School
the students work on developing the skills and knowledge
necessary to be able to create, analyse, perform and respond
using appropriate musical vocabulary. Students will be provided
with the opportunity to perform as a soloist, in small groups as
well as in a class ensemble.
