Co-Curricular and Camps Health and Physical Education (HPE) GGPS PE mission statement and philosophy Mission Statement The mission of Health and Physical Education is to empower all students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity as a foundation for a healthy, productive, and fulfilling life. At Guildford Grammar Preparatory School, we will expose students to an array of HPE and physical activity experiences which will add a broad range of athletic qualities, fundamental movement skills and game strategies to students physical literacy repertoire. This will give students the tools to lead active lifestyles and be meaningful contributors in a just, loving and peaceful society. Philosophy We will achieve our mission statement by creating a comprehensive and engaging curriculum with game-centred lessons. Using the Playing for Life Philosophy we will create a fun and inclusive environment for children of all abilities to participate in sporting activities resulting in a positive and rewarding experience. By using this approach we will maximise learning time and student involvement whilst providing numerous opportunities to practice. Our coaching and teaching will be guided by 6 core Playing for Life principles: 1. Game is the focus - the teacher/coach enables students to develop skills and tactics through games. Sessions are designed with a particular skill outcome in mind. 2. Teacher/Coach is a facilitator - the teacher/coach acts as a facilitator and sets challenges for students and uses questioning to guide students towards solutions rather than directing students. 3. Discrete teaching/coaching – students are coached discretely to create an encouraging and supportive environment. 4. Role models - coaches use students to highlight skilful play and demonstrate good technique. 5. Ask the students – teachers/coaches ask students how the game can be made easier or harder. This engagement 37 increases participation and indicates if the game is achieving its outcome. 6. CHANGE IT - simple variations to games create fun, safe, inclusive and challenging environments, and means children of all abilities and backgrounds are engaged. Sporting teams will be coached by trained and knowledgeable staff and coaches using a Game Sense approach. This will equip students with transferable skills and strategies that can be used in multiple sports, helping them develop their Physical Literacy.
