Communication and Preparation Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Do we have student leaders? What is the purpose of Prize Giving? Assemblies A range of leadership positions are offered in the Preparatory School. These leadership positions are for students in their final year in the school. The aim of the Leadership Program is to encourage and develop personal responsibility and organisational skills. School leaders are expected to act as role models for the younger students and to assist in the smooth running of the Preparatory School. Elections for leadership positions are held early in Term 1. Qualities of leadership are encouraged and enacted in all year levels. The annual Prize Giving evening is a compulsory event for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. Prize Giving is an opportunity to recognise the achievements of our students. This event is the last formal opportunity for the School to gather as a community and is a fitting celebration for the end of the academic year. Leadership opportunities exist for: At Guildford Grammar Preparatory School, we enjoy celebrating birthdays and special occasions with your child. Children from Kindergarten to Year 6 participate in assemblies at 8.25am on Friday mornings in Priestley Hall throughout each term. Assemblies provide the opportunity to celebrate special achievements, showcase talented musicians, see performances by students and hear guest speakers. Commendation certificates are presented at Assembly. Parents are always welcome to attend. How are students’ achievements recognised? We believe in positive reinforcement by encouraging students to do their best through setting goals and striving to achieve those goals. In the classroom, teachers award academic points, reward with stickers, stamps, written comments or simply an encouraging word. Commendation Awards are presented at the weekly assembly. These awards recognise individual student achievement and are highly sought after by the students. Specialist teachers also award certificates from time to time. Teachers always ensure that awards are dispersed fairly and widely across the student population. 28 Celebrations and Birthdays • You are welcome to bring in a small treat or cupcakes to share. • Your child’s teacher will be able to advise you of the number of students in the class and any food allergies or cultural considerations. • Birthday invitations are not to be handed out at school unless the WHOLE class is invited. We ask for the same courtesy to be extended when Easter eggs or Christmas cards or treats are distributed.
