DATA VISUALIZATIONS
With a wealth of data available from the annual
National Survey on Drug Use and Health, the team
conceptualized and developed content for data
visualizations that could bring numbers around the
NPW daily theme topics to life. For each theme day,
the visualization focused on a specific data point and
essential message to share with viewers:
• SHARING IS NOT CARING: Sharing of prescription
medications with family members and friends
contributes to opioid misuse and abuse.

• BRINGING DOWN BINGE DRINKING: Although
rates of underage drinking have decreased, alcohol
use by young people often involves binge drinking.
• EXPOSING MARIJUANA’S HIDDEN DANGERS:
Frequent marijuana use by young people appears
to be associated with several health issues,
including major depressive episodes.
• PREVENTING YOUTH EXPOSURE TO
E-CIGARETTES: Rates of e-cigarette use among
young people are on the rise, and tobacco exposure
during these years can contribute to nicotine
addiction.
• STEMMING THE TIDE OF SUICIDE IN AMERICA:
Millions of adults consider, plan, or attempt suicide
each year, showing suicide prevention to be a
priority public health issue.
The Power of Partnerships:
Amplifying NPW and Prevention
Cultivating an engaged network of federal and national partners to promote and participate in NPW throughout the year is integral to
amplifying the message of NPW and solidifying its success and expanded reach.
SAMHSA’s relationships with the 41 federal and national organization partners allowed NPW 2019 to inspire new audiences across
the country to talk about substance misuse prevention and take action in their homes, workplaces, and communities.
Partners helped advance our work in several ways. This year, NPW 2019 partners participated in the NPW working group and
quarterly partner calls; served as webinar speakers in the NPW 2019 Webinar Series; invited SAMHSA leaders to speak at events;
promoted NPW messages, data visualizations, and images on their social media channels; and shared prevention resources and
activities in partner spotlights in the Prevention Works email newsletter.
Two new partners added their support for NPW in 2019: the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA). These organizations shared NPW resources in new arenas for SAMHSA and advanced conversations
about prevention to key audiences—especially institutions of higher education.
