26 ORGANIZATION NAME CITY, STATE ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION NAME CITY, STATE ACTIVITY River’s Bend Prevention Center Troy, MI During NPW 2019, River’s Bend Prevention Center visited three local fast food restaurants and set up tables with information about prescription drug take-back locations in three local counties. The team encouraged customers at the restaurants to properly dispose of medications and promote proper disposal to others to prevent prescription drug misuse, and customers were asked to sign a pledge promising to return unused prescription drugs. If customers returned their prescription drugs with their pledge, they received a coupon for a free treat at the restaurant. San Fernando Valley Partnership & Communities In Action SPA-2 Coalition San Fernando, CA The San Fernando Valley Partnership (SFVP) and Communities In Action SPA-2 Coalition, in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Administration and Los Angeles Police Department, kicked off NPW by hosting a town hall meeting on opioids and fentanyl. Speakers included law enforcement, medical professionals, families affected by opioids, overdose survivors, treatment providers, and prevention services organizations. The meeting helped educate the community about prevention and the risks of these drugs and also gave organizers a forum to distribute information on safe storage and disposal of over- the-counter and prescription drugs. Riverside University Health System, Behavioral Health Department Family Advocate Program Riverside, CA The week after NPW, the Riverside University Health System’s Family Advocate Program in the Behavioral Health Department hosted a resource fair for the community called Live Life Well. The fair included resources from the Behavioral Health Department, live performances, and autographs from Los Angeles Laker Girls. Saving Lives Camarillo Camarillo, CA RyeACT Rye, NY During NPW, Saving Lives Camarillo hosted a panel discussion titled “Alcohol, Vaping, Opioids, or Mental Health. You Decide.” to raise awareness and educate the community about the importance of prevention in all four areas. The four-person panel included representation from different community sectors, who each made a case for why their assigned topic is the most important in youth substance abuse prevention. Panelists used a combination of local data and personal anecdotes to make their case, and the audience had an opportunity to ask questions in the final segment; at the end of the town hall, participants voted on the most important issue. SOFA (Saving Others for Archie) Oconomowoc, WI In observance of NPW 2019, to generate awareness of the opioid epidemic, and to honor all those lost or involved in the struggle with addiction, Saving Others for Archie (SOFA) hosted a “concert and training” evening in the park. The night included two educational trainings, one for educational Overdose Prevention Naloxone (Narcan) and one for Question, Persuade & Refer Suicide Prevention. Immediately following the entertainment and trainings, SOFA held four organized jumps into the water: Recovery Jump, Elected Officials and State Leaders Jump, Mental Health Awareness Jump, and a Jump for Archie & Others. The event concluded with a community candlelight vigil. 2019 OUTCOMES REPORT RyeACT (Rye Action for Children and Teens) hosted a prevention fair in May at its local library geared toward community members of all ages. The fair featured interactive activities that focused on providing information about substance use trends, as well as a hands-on activity for each substance it was raising awareness about—alcohol, marijuana, e-cigarettes, and pain medications—with each activity led by its youth coalition members. The fair also served as an opportunity for community members to meet sector representatives, pick up educational materials and resources, and sign up for upcoming programs. 2019 OUTCOMES REPORT 27
