ORGANIZATION NAME CITY, STATE ACTIVITY ORGANIZATION NAME CITY, STATE ACTIVITY Galen College of Nursing Louisville, KY Throughout NPW, Galen College of Nursing held presentations on trauma and violence, homelessness and housing, wellness, suicide prevention, and prescription drug misuse. Lawrence School Falmouth, MA Throughout the school year, the 8th grade class at Lawrence School used art to promote substance use prevention. As part of a three-year project, students are designing and painting a wall mural to portray positive problem-solving skills that youth can use to stay drug-free. Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities Atlanta, GA Each day during NPW, the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities celebrated NPW with a series of “Lunch and Learn” presentations and trainings, as well as a kickoff event on Monday. Presentations and trainings included the following: • Prescription Drug Prevention: Why It Matters • Clearing the Air: All About E-cigarettes and Vaping • Mocktails and Conversation: Preventing Underage Drinking and Alcohol Misuse • Lunch & Learn: It’s Not a Game, It’s Your Life: A Substance Use Prevention Quiz Show • Suicide Prevention Presentation Program Lincoln County High School SADD Hamlin, WV During NPW, the Lincoln County High School SADD chapter held a banquet lunch for SADD members to discuss how to advocate for drug-free teens. LifeWorks Austin, TX During NPW, two programs at LifeWorks (Next Step, a youth substance abuse prevention program, and Youth and Adult Counseling) co-hosted a weeklong contest around substance abuse prevention and positive mental health, giving prizes to staff who answered questions correctly. LifeWorks also hosted an NPW celebration with staff wearing green for mental health and red for youth substance abuse prevention, and they posted a list of substance abuse prevention and mental health resources on their webpage during NPW. Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) Riverdale, MD The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) hosted an Employee Fitness and Wellness Fair that highlighted NPW by providing a day of fitness and wellness for their employees. The fair featured an informational table with resources focusing on mental health and substance use prevention, and M-NCPPC held webinars on the benefits of fitness and wellness during the week. North Quabbin Community Coalition Athol, MA North Quabbin Community Coalition hosted a stress management workshop and yoga class at a local high school during NPW. Coalition staff facilitated the event during students’ gym class and taught them healthy techniques for managing stress. New River Valley Community Services (NRVCS) Statewide in VA During NPW, New River Valley Community Services (NRVCS) posted a series of daily videos that focused on each of NPW’s daily topics. NRVCS shared the videos through their social media channels as well as with local community coalitions. Hawaii Partnership to Prevent Underage Drinking (HPPUD) Key West High School (KWHS) 22 2019 OUTCOMES REPORT HI (statewide) Key West, FL HPPUD declared the month of May Prevent Underage Drinking Month, with official proclamations from both the governor of Hawaii and the mayor of Honolulu. During NPW, HPPUD also held its third annual Island-Wide Sign Waving, where people from community sites across Hawaii waved signs about substance use prevention and positive mental health at coordinated times. HPPUD also held a Communities Talk: Town Hall Meeting to Prevent Underage Drinking event (a SAMHSA-supported initiative) in early May, “It Takes a Community,” to break stigmas surrounding substance misuse and emphasize the importance of starting the prevention conversation. During that event, HPPUD shared useful resources on how to start important conversations with youth and showcased work from prevention partners. KWHS’ school dance team, the Conchettes, danced at students’ lunch period during NPW to promote awareness about drugs, alcohol misuse, and suicide. Students created posters to hold up during this event that were later displayed throughout the school, and they set up a booth with resources on alcohol, drugs, vaping, and suicide. 2019 OUTCOMES REPORT 23
