Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Massachusetts (BCBSMA) Weymouth,
MA BCBSMA invited customers and other stakeholders to attend an opioid
forum at its offices in Boston on the Monday during NPW. Panelists
discussed their experiences in addressing the opioid crisis in their
workplace and gave feedback on their use of BCBSMA’s opioid toolkits,
which were provided to five pilot accounts in fall 2018. BCBSMA also
trained forum attendees on how to administer Narcan ® and distributed
opioid information toolkits to take home. Carroll County Substance
Abuse Prevention Office
(CCSAPO) Westminster,
MD CCSAPO coordinated numerous activities across the county for NPW,
2019: On Friday, more than 200 people attended the Community
Sober Block Party and Walk; about 350 youth attended Safe Kids Day,
which educated families and the community about substance abuse
and mental health disorders; and Carroll County staff distributed
fact sheets and materials from the NPW Event Planning Toolkit to
attendees.
BP Power Princeton, IL To raise awareness of drug and alcohol misuse, BP Power (a youth
coalition) hosted a poster contest for BP Power students to show what
they can do to help prevent substance abuse in their communities. BP
Power announced the winner on the final day of NPW 2019. California State

(CSUSM) Student Health
and Counseling Services
and Active Minds CSUSM San Marcos,
CA CSUSM Student Health and Counseling Services and Active Minds
CSUSM observed Mental Health Month and NPW with relaxation
stations to promote positive mental health. At the stations, these
groups provided strategies, tips, and tools for reducing stress before
finals week. Campbell County
Prevention Council Gillette, WY Campbell County Prevention Council youth coalitions at two junior
high schools celebrated NPW by sharing prevention facts during
school announcements all week. The youth coalitions also submitted
prevention messaging to local radio stations and orchestrated a social
media push for those messages.
2019 OUTCOMES REPORT
Throughout the week, CCSAPO gave presentations focused on
preventing prescription and opioid drug misuse during 9th grade
health classes, giving state and local leaders a forum for discussing
how the community can take action to raise awareness of these
issues.
CCSAPO and approximately 40 teens from Boys & Girls Clubs of
America developed PSAs for the local radio station and designed
poster board projects to promote NPW.
Catholic Charities of
Columbia and Greene
Counties
Valatie, NY
During NPW, Catholic Charities of Columbia and Greene Counties
hosted a Lunchtime Prevention Expo at a local high school, where local
agencies, the school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions chapter,
and school resource officers encouraged students to interact and
participate in activities promoting good health and wellness. Catholic
Charities of Columbia and Greene Counties ran PSAs on local radio
stations promoting NPW and offering prevention tips, and they hosted
a radio talk show discussing NPW. They also created school toolkits
with information about NPW—such as website content, morning
announcements about prevention, and a list of local resources—as
well as a follow-up survey to gain insights into how schools in both
counties participated in prevention.
