The Prevention Works email newsletter connects prevention
organizations and individuals with resources, news, and ideas to make
substance use prevention happen every day. It also covers prevention
work happening across the country by sharing NPW events taking
place throughout the year and spotlighting NPW partners.
In September 2018, the newsletter was redesigned with a new look
and feel to reflect its role as a major prevention resource. Newsletter
subscriptions increased by 25% compared to 2018, allowing the
NPW team to communicate important information to more than 1,500
prevention-focused individuals and organizations.
Click-through rates are one of the most important metrics to collect
when evaluating how users are engaging with newsletters. During
2019, SAMHSA achieved a click-through rate of 34% for Prevention
Works—more than 10% higher than the industry average 1 —proving
the value of this newsletter to the prevention audience.
During NPW, daily Prevention Works newsletters were sent with
resources corresponding to that day’s theme. This year, Monday’s
newsletter about preventing prescription drug and opioid misuse was
the most popular daily email, with a 31% click-through rate. This
shows a close alignment of SAMHSA’s focus on the opioid crisis and
the national response to it on the community level.

Webinar Series Yields Engagement
SAMHSA’s NPW webinars offer a means to expand access to NPW content and messaging, as well as equip SAMHSA grantees, state
and community organizations, and individuals working in prevention with the information and evidence-based resources they need
to make their efforts successful.
SAMHSA continued to grow its NPW Webinar Series in 2019. To determine the webinar topics, SAMHSA reviewed the suggestions
provided by past webinar participants in their voluntary evaluation form feedback, as well as sought suggestions from NPW 2019
partners, including the NPW 2019 workgroup members. Final topics were selected by SAMHSA to reflect the needs of the prevention
community, align with SAMHSA prevention priorities, and provide educational opportunities and conversations regarding the NPW
health themes.
Each webinar was designed to spotlight how federal and national partners and communities inspire prevention actions and change
lives, as well as share evidence-based practices and approaches for effective substance misuse prevention work around the country.
