I f­you­revel­in­the­opportunity­to­rub­shoulders­with the­people­producing­your­food,­you­just­missed­a great­opportunity.­Fear­not,­however,­because­those producers­are­a­part­of­your­community­and­the­recent dinner­ at­ Southern­ Sonder­ in­ Custer­ was­ all­ about shining­the­spotlight­on­them­so­you,­too,­can­take­part­in­what they­are­offering. The­dinner­was­sponsored­by­the­S.D.­Specialty­Producers Association­(SDSPA)­and­sought­to­connect­local­food­enthu- siasts­with­the­myriad­local­options­available­to­them,­while doubling­as­a­fundraiser­for­the­SDSPA.­ The­SDSPA­is­a­501c3­that­promotes­agritourism,­producer tours,­an­annual­conference­and­other­events­across­the­state that­promote­and­bring­attention­to­local­food­producers. Keely­Mahony­of­Black­Hills­Balloons­approached­Cory Tomovick,­membership­coordinator­for­SDSPA,­with­the­sug- gestion­they­might­consider­holding­a­“supper­club”­dinner, but­with­all­ingredients­sourced­as­locally­as­possible. “I­had­tasted­and­observed­what­was­going­on­at­Skogen­in Custer,”­Cory­said,­“and­it­was­something­special.­Custer­is­a major­part­of­what’s­happening­with­South­Dakota’s­food­iden- tity­and­we­wanted­to­tell­the­story­of­and­offer­support­to­local food­producers.” Tom­Barnes­of­Pleasant­Valley­Farm­in­Custer­has­been­an active­member­of­SDSPA­and­was­fully­on­board­with­the­farm to­table­dinner­idea,­offering­his­product­—­goat­meat­—­as one­of­the­primary­ingredients­for­the­dinner.­He­and­his­wife, Susan,­have­been­tenderly­caring­for­and­raising­their­meat goats­since­2004­and­have­supplied­Black­Hills­Burger­&­Bun Co.­in­Custer,­local­individual­consumers­and­restaurants­in Rapid­City.­Tom­has­presented­at­SDSPA­conferences­and­is always­enthusiastic­about­local­food­producers,­conservation and­his­product,­so­they­were­a­natural­choice­for­the­dinner. Chef­Joseph­Raney­and­his­wife,­Eliza,­of­Skogen­Kitchen, lent­their­cooking­and­service­expertise­to­the­event,­which­was held­Nov.­29.­Tod­and­Tarin­Hartman,­owners­of­Southern­Son- der,­were­happy­to­offer­their­home­for­the­event. “I­wanted­to­combine­modern­and­traditional­techniques­to highlight­the­local­menu,”­Joseph­said.
