In 1874, gold was first discovered in the Black Hills just one mile from the cur- rent city of Custer City. In 1875, Custer became the first city in the Black Hills. People rushed to Custer to find their treasure. Little did they know that the place itself is one of the greatest treas- ures. The city of Custer has a population of 1,956 and it is in the middle of 1.2 million acres of Black Hills National Forest. The Custer area has something to offer every- one. Most things that might interest you about living in the Black Hills, such as Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Black Elk Wilderness, Norbeck Wildlife Pre- serve, Jewel Cave National Monument, Wind Cave National Park and Black Elk Peak (the highest point between the Rockies and the Pyrenees Mountains), can be found just minutes from your doorstep. The Black Hills feature unique rock formations known for their beauty, hiking and world-class rock climbing. Year-round activities are plentiful.
