Discussing Options and Possibilities

Filing for Office

Meet the Candidates

Meet the Candidates is a more relaxed

question and answer event with stations for

each candidate. As a result, JCLers are free to walk

around and ask candidates questions. It may be

helpful to prepare for wide variety of questions. You

will have the chance to meet new people and make some

new friends. There will be room for candidates to hang

signs and decorate their area. This is a good opportunity

for JCLers to become more familiar with candidates'

names and ask questions about the materials hung

behind them. N.B. Bring extra water to this

event as you will be talking a lot and your

throat might get dry.

The Nominations Committee Meeting

is where candidates must give a two

minute speech on their platform,

experience, reasons for running, etc. You may

plan accordingly the information you would like

to include in this speech versus General Assembly III.

Your speech is limited to a maximum of two minutes.

Delegates from each state, sponsors, and others will

be in attendance. Based on candidates’ speeches, voting

delegates will choose two candidates to run for each office

and place on the final ballot. Your local sponsor or

sponsor’s representative must be present at this

event. Immediately following the meeting,

candidates must turn in all campaign receipts

and campaign materials to the NJCL

parliamentarian for review.

Campaigning begins after the

conclusion of this event.

Running for Office: The Step by Step

If you are interested in running for office, it is important to research the process of running for national office and everything expected of you if you are elected. As soon as you have decided, discuss the process with your local sponsor, state or provincial chair(s), and parent(s) as you will need their approval for running for office. Make sure to contact your state or provincial chair(s) to determine your state’s process or your provincial process for choosing a candidate to run for national office. Only one candidate per state or province may run. Therefore, many states or provinces have applications, elections, or other forms of choosing between multiple candidates or approving one candidate to run.

After you have been through the necessary processes of approval (and been approved) to run as a national candidate from your state or province, you will need to complete the “NJCL Nomination Forms” (which can be found on the web page under the "About Us" section). Once you have completed the forms, email them to me ([email protected]) by June 15, 2019. If you are running for the office of president, you will also need to complete Form P, which can be found on the same page as the "Nomination Forms", and email the forms to me by June 15, 2019 (the same time that your "Nomination Forms" are due). I will email all candidates who are eligible to run for office and who have turned in all forms on time a list of the number of pre-filed candidates in each office on June 20, 2019. After this email has been sent out, candidates may change the position they filed for by June 30, 2019. I will then send out another email to all candidates noting any change in the number of candidates running in each position. If you have any questions or are having trouble with the forms, feel free to email me and I will provide a copy of them for you. I will be sending emails detailing the process and further campaigning rules and regulations that may be subject to change leading up to convention.
