Petunias
For garden color, it is hard to beat Petunias! These longtime favorites
are self-cleaning, and their large, colorful blooms will help attract
both butterflies and hummingbirds to your yard. They are versatile
being perfect for baskets, planters, combinations, or the landscape.
Pretty much, anywhere, they can be guaranteed at least 6 hours of
direct sunlight, is a good place for petunias.
While they are relatively easy to grow, there are some important keys
to keeping them looking good- especially, as the heat of summer
hits. Regular water & fertilization is crucial to keeping your petunias
looking good. Periodically, clip or pinch back stems to help plants
stay looking full & colorful. Remember, deer & rabbits are fans of
petunias too, so take measures to help protect your plantings. Pests
to watch for include aphids & budworms. Also, if planting in beds,
be sure to rotate crops every couple of years so you do not build up
soil diseases.
