Jump into Jewelry !
Laura Cronen 10 -14YR / 9am-3pm
CONCEPT : Accessorize your artistic skills , and take an in-depth look at the art of jewelry making In this unique workshop . We explore jewelry from other countries and time periods , understand the different reasons people make and wear jewelry , and create our own pieces . We begin by sketching , researching and conversing to formalize our very own jewelry designs . Students then decide what type of jewelry they wish to make , such as earrings , pendants , bracelets or even a small metal piece you can use as a keychain or ornament . After that , we dive into learning metalsmithing techniques such as sawing , drilling , enameling and making connections while working with copper , silver , enamel and semi precious stone beads . Finally , we file , sand and polish our pieces to perfection . Students will take home jewelry ready to wear or to give to someone special !
FACULTY : Laura Cronen has worked with children of all ages , and has spent the last 11 years teaching jewelry and pottery at Rocky Mountain High School in Fort Collins , Colo . She is also the Visual Arts Curriculum Facilitator for Poudre School District . Laura holds an M . A . in art education .

African Bead Safari
Wendy Ellsworth 10-14YR / 9am-12pm
CONCEPT : Pack your imagination and join us on a bead safari to Africa ! We visit the Zulu and Ndebele peoples of South Africa and the Samburu of Kenya to learn some of their unusual beading techniques . We then apply these techniques to make colorful earrings , bracelets , pins and rings using glass seed beads , wire , needle and thread . Choose from a wide variety of colorful beads to make your own fun and unique wearable projects . Pictures and examples of authentic African beadwork nurture our inspiration .
FACULTY : Wendy Ellsworth has been a seed bead artist since 1970 and has a private studio at her home in Weaverville , N . C . She has spent many years as an artistin-the-schools in Colorado and Pennsylvania and helped establish an art program in the Delta , Colo ., school district . She teaches classes in beadwork nationally and internationally to both adults and children , and has made eight trips to Kenya to work with Maasai and Samburu beading groups . Wendy ’ s book , Beading – The Creative Spirit , was published by SkyLight Paths in 2009 .

The Art of Wax
Maggie Stewart 10-14YR / 1pm-4pm
CONCEPT : Delve into the different applications of wax in the art studio in this fun and focused workshop ! We begin the week using pencils , watercolors and oil pastels as we draft our initial sketches . We look at magazines , books and online sources as we research themes we wish to explore such as space , nature or travel . We then bring our sketches to life by trying the various applications of wax painting also known as encaustic . We learn a wide array of techniques each day and then spend the week creating our own pieces using colorful wax paint , unique stencils , carving tools and collage materials . We also take time to learn the batik method and create a unique batik piece or wall hanging tapestry — using natural dyes , silk and hot wax . Please take note that this workshop is for the focused young artist as we work with heat sources , advanced tools and hot wax .
FACULTY : Maggie Stewart is a professional artist and owner of Mama ’ s Belly Inc ., a business specializing in bronze belly bowls . She also creates one-of-a-kind work along with public art in collaboration with her husband . Maggie has taught for over 25 years in a variety of museums , art centers , schools and colleges . She maintains a studio and foundry in Denver , and sells her art worldwide .
