July 30 – August 3 July 30 – August 3 August 6 – 10 Garden Party Game Design ArtBots Hilary Forsyth Kari Varner Caroline Hanson 9-12YR / 1pm-4pm 9-12YR / 9am-3pm 9-12YR / 9am-3pm CONCEPT: Walk your creativity outside and into the garden! In this one-of-a-kind workshop, we use clay to create adornments for an outside oasis. We think about how a garden is art and how art is part of the garden. We look at garden culture from aro und the world as we consider how to accent our own green spaces — perhaps a red mobile draws attention to your red tulips. We learn handbuilding and glazing techniques as we create colorful tiny houses for creatures to visit, retro garden gnomes to bring good luck, delicate sounding wind chimes, and more! FACULTY: Hilary Forsyth is the Art Director at the Aspen Community School, where she has taught all ages for the past 14 years. She has received the Patricia C. Moore Outstanding Educator Award as well as the Mary Ellen Nix Excellence in Art Teaching Award. She also illustrated the BearBop Press children’s books Family Field Guide Series featuring the following volumes: Rocky Mountain Mammals, Rocky Mountain Plants, Rocky Mountain Birds and Rocky Mountain Bugs. CONCEPT: Unlock the secrets of video game design and create your own games and animations in this tech-centric workshop! We use analog and digital tools to explore the basics of game design, from character and level creation to simple movements and enemy mechanics. Using Scratch — a block-based programming language, which allows even the most beginner coders to start wrapping their minds around the concepts and tools available — we create mazes, quiz games, platforms, fighting games and more. This workshop combines technical skill and creative challenges, while encouraging students to make games they find fun. The engagement continues with a personal login that allows you to keep working on and playing your games at home. FACULTY: Kari Varner received her M.F.A. from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She is the former Studio Coordinator of Photography and New Media at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and currently teaches photography at the University of Denver.
