July 9 – 13 July 16 – 20 July 23 – 27 Around the World in a Week! Trash to Treasure It Takes a Village Margaret Dye Traci Wilson M. Paige Ward 6-8YR / 9am-3pm 6-8YR / 9am-3pm 6-8YR / 9am-3pm Travel the world through art making in an immersive week long workshop! We begin by creating our very own artful passports. Then we jet off to a variety of countries such as India, Australia, South Africa, Mexico, Canada and China. We look at art forms and artistic cultures from each of these different countries as we learn traditional methods and techniques to apply to our own art pieces. Some of our projects include elaborate Chinese fans, Aboriginal Australian dot paintings, South African masks and drums, woven Mexican textiles and tin art or hojalata, plus intricate Indian henna hands and peacock illustrations. We create with a wide variety of worldly artistic mediums such as cardboard, construction paper, yarn, ink, paint, glue and more. FACULTY: Marge Dye received her Masters in art education and visual studies from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. She spent two summers as a Children’s Program Intern at Anderson Ranch Arts Center and will be returning for her third summer as a workshop instructor. Currently, she is an associate teacher in first grade at Aspen Country Day School. CONCEPT: Expand your mind and reinvent everyday objects or items that have been thrown away into new and beautiful artistic creations. In this evocative workshop, we consider how to upcycle materials and integrate them into our art making process, bringing awareness to our environment and waste. We find inspiration in plastic bottle caps, plastic silverware, old magazines and newspapers, egg cartons and even larger objects such as old window frames and tiles. The sky’s the limit for our imaginations as we reinvent these disregarded items into functional and decorative pieces. We make a bouquet of flowers sculpted from plastic spoons, painted landscapes on glass windows, magazine bowls and more. Come join in on the fun and rethink what art can be! FACULTY: Traci Wilson is an art teacher at Glenwood Springs Middle School. She is originally from the Roaring Fork Valley. Her background includes anthropology and studio art. Traci’s continued dedication to research and the promotion of art education led her to become an art educator. CONCEPT: It’s all teamwork in this fun and inclusive workshop that investigates the value of community through creation! Work with a team of students to develop your own village of ceramic houses inspired by different cultures. Learn hand building and wheel- throwing processes to create a series of houses that contribute to a larger installation. While the clay pieces are in the kiln, students use paper cutouts and patterns to design the layout for the village outside on the Anderson Ranch campus. On the last day of class, we assemble our glazed and fired village in a final show for parents at Anderson Ranch. In addition to learning how to build and glaze ceramics, you experience the value of teamwork, community, diversity and power in numbers. FACULTY: M. Paige Ward is originally from Frog Jump, Tenn. She holds an M.F.A. in studio arts and ceramics from the University of Florida. Paige has instructed both children and adult clay class at Mudslingers Studio in Huntingdon, Tenn, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Paige is currently an artist in residence at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
