CONCEPT: Embark on an immersive three-year journey designed to expand the scope of your
FACULTY: Chris Gustin lives, works and produces art in his South
Dartmouth, Mass., studio. He received his M.F.A. from Alfred University
and taught for many years at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He
is a full-time studio artist making large-scale sculptural vessels and pots.
Chris was recently inducted into the International Academy of Ceramics,
and in 2016, the American Crafts Council honored him as an Artist Fellow.
clay knowledge and develop a critical eye regarding a rigorous studio practice. Renowned
practitioners, Chris Gustin and Randy Johnston, designed this three-year curriculum for
advanced potters, sculptors and ceramists who are interested in a sustained mentored study
experience. The course includes studio work, discussions and critiques. In addition to the week-
long summer workshop, you participate in a midyear review as well as individual mentoring on
a bimonthly basis.
We meet twice a year, once in the summer for a week-long workshop at Anderson Ranch
and then by a group Skype session in the winter. You are expected to work on your projects
throughout the three years. In the mentorship program, the instructors are available for one-
hour bimonthly Skype meetings. In year one, each instructor meets with one-half of the group
during the first half of the year, and then switches for the second half of the year. The second
year includes a two-week workshop at Anderson Ranch, and the third year incorporates a one-
week workshop culminating with an exhibition at the Ranch.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students use and work with materials, clays and firing temperatures
with which they are comfortable. You also discuss strategies for clays and glazes with the
instructors.
ACTIVITIES: We engage in an interactive, hands-on setting comprised of formal demonstration,
slide shows, group and individual discussions. Each student works with the faculty to establish
a path and direction he or she would like to pursue.

Randy Johnston has been working in clay for 40 years, and shares a
studio with Jan McKeachie-Johnston where they enjoy their love of wood-
fired kilns. He is now a full-time studio artist after a long teaching career
at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. Randy received his M.F.A.
from Southern Illinois University and is a two-time recipient of a National
Endowment for the Arts grant.
