Mariana Garibay Raeke, Four Nights Michael Lorsung, Disparate Materials Vivian Beer, Untitled August 20 – 24 August 27 – 31 September 10 – 28 Moldmaking: pattern & repetition Understanding Materials: Digital Realities: integrating digital Mariana Garibay Raeke 4 materials in 5 days & traditional fabrication methods O CONCEPT: Create sculptures of personal meaning while investigating design, form, structure and ways in which objects convey context in an introductory workshop that encourages exploration. This workshop focuses on two- and three-dimensional design and how the use of objects — new and repurposed — defines form and conveys meaning. Students are introduced to contemporary and modern artists whose sculptural works exemplify the language of two- and three-dimensional form. Through presentations and demonstrations, you are exposed to a variety of materials and techniques that highlight the use of the found object in sculpture. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: We make small clay objects from which silicone rubber and plaster molds are created. We learn to mix and cast white concrete as we reproduce the elements of our compositions multiple times. We go on to examine individual ways of attaching the pieces to the wall. Moldmaking and casting techniques are demonstrated daily. ACTIVITIES: The first part of the class consists of presentations and a series of exercises aimed at understanding the possibilities within patterns. Participants develop multi-part compositions. Individual and group feedback supports the development of each project. The class wraps up with the presentation and discussion of at least a segment of these modular sculptures. FACULTY: Mariana Garibay Raeke received her M.F.A. in painting/printmaking from Yale University. Her work is driven by an interest in the potential for transformation contained in matter, and the wide range of permutations that a specific material can assume. Mariana teaches at Rutgers University, Newark, N.J. Michael Lorsung O Set off on an exciting artistic path in an introductory course that explores the possibilities of metal, wood, found objects and plaster in making three-dimensional forms. We participate in fabricating processes associated with these materials along with discussions involving design basics and idea building. Students gain a strong foundation to establishing or continuing their own studio practices. This workshop focuses on basic safe tool and equipment use while understanding a variety of materials. Build a foundation for sculpture with four key materials in just five days. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: This workshop includes fabrication techniques involving steel, wood, found objects and plaster. Students weld steel, cut wood, pour plaster and connect objects. ACTIVITIES: The week includes daily lectures and demonstrations in addition to daily one-on-one and group discussions. FACULTY: Michael Lorsung is a transmedia artist based in Colorado. He received his M.F.A. from Ohio University in Athens Ohio. His work investigates the similitude between the value of craft objects, and that of industrially produced goods. Michael is the Studio Coordinator for Sculpture at Anderson Ranch. CONCEPT: www.justanassembler.com Vivian Beer & Michael Lorsung III IV This workshop provides participants the opportunity to hone their skills with CAD, and put these into practice using state of the art CAD/CAM equipment to bring digitally designed components into reality. Design, cut, and and shape material digitally, and then use a cadre of traditional sculpture methods to synthesize these ingredients into larger sculptural compositions. This course provides the freedom to explore the place of digital fabrication in a contemporary studio practice. MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Students have access to staff and faculty familiar with the specific CNC tooling, CAD/ CAM design software, as well as all of the metal, wood, and other media fabrication facilities available in the sculpture studio here at Anderson Ranch. ACTIVITIES: Technical demonstrations involving CAD, CAM, and machining, lectures, and one-on-one and group discussions are central to the daily activites. FACULTY: Vivian Beer is a studio artist based in New England. She holds an M.F.A. from Cranbrook Academy of Art and teaches at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland School of Crafts, Purchase College, SUNY and the Center for Metal Arts. Her national exhibitions include public art in Winslow Park and Portland, Maine, and Old Morse in Cambridge, Mass.
