The Narrative Container : boite en valise
Lauren Fensterstock
II III
CONCEPT : Develop the tools necessary to express your ideas with nuance and clarity , and find methods to push your work into new territory . Inspired by Marcel Duchamp ’ s Boite en Valise — a suitcase filled with miniatures of his life ’ s work — participants make their own collection inside a box , suitcase or found container . Through Duchamp ’ s example , we consider different kinds of collections . What is the difference between a wonder cabinet , a natural history collection , a surrealist collage , and a Joseph Cornell assemblage ? We explore the cultural messaging of specific formats , materials and contexts .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Using simple tools , writing exercises , drawing , collage and map-making exercises , we mine your artwork for new questions and possibilities . Participants can expect to leave with the seeds for future projects , including sketches , models , plans , an artist statement , a list of questions and detailed writing about individual works .
ACTIVITIES : Students investigate their work through guided exercises , slide lectures and conversations . We choose materials and formats to respond to conceptual prompts and practice articulating the meaning behind our choices .
FACULTY : Lauren Fensterstock is a United States Artist Barr Fellow , whose work has been the subject of recent solo exhibitions at MOCA Jacksonville , John Michael Kohler Art Center , Bowdoin College Museum of Art and Drexel University . Her work is represented by Claire Oliver Gallery in New York .
