Beyond the Brush : material research
Michael Arcega
O
CONCEPT : Infuse your work with new and alternative methods in a workshop that explores ways to make paintings through the collection and application of materials in addition to paint . Throughout the course , we work with found objects , industrial supplies and other alternative resources that encourage students to expand their paintings into small-scale installations or simply facilitate painters to emerge from the wall and work more three-dimensionally . Surface treatment considerations , form , object placement and the use of color are of special consideration in this investigational and dynamic workshop .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We begin using a luan panel and a collection of non-traditional materials . As a starting point , we explore Richard Serra ’ s verb list . After the quick exercise , students find exciting ways to incorporate their own interests , sensibilities and personal iconography using the materials of their choice .
ACTIVITIES : After a slide presentation and discussion , the class transitions to hands-on production . We start with direct engagement with the panel material and hand tool use . The rest of the workshop focuses on the production of a non-traditional painting . We all learn from each other ’ s material research and exploration .
FACULTY : Michael Arcega is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in sculpture and installation . His research-based work revolves largely around language and sociopolitical dynamics . Directly informed by historic narratives , material significance and geography , Michael ’ s subject matter deals with circumstances where power relations are unbalanced .

Assemblage : 2-D into 3-D Arthur Simms
O
CONCEPT : Discover the possibilities of multi-dimensional art in a workshop that focuses on how the use of objects — new and repurposed — defines forms and conveys meaning . You are introduced to contemporary and modern artists whose sculptural works exemplify the language of two- and three-dimensional form . Through presentations and demonstrations , students are exposed to a variety of materials and techniques that highlight the use of the found object in sculpture . We create sculptures of personal meaning while investigating design , form , structure and ways in which objects convey context .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : We experience the use of divergent materials to create works . A variety of found objects , such as old tools , furniture , toys , etc ., are used to create sculptures . Construction , binding , wrapping and other ways of adhering and incorporating objects , both physically and visually , are demonstrated and discussed .
ACTIVITIES : We explore the basic principles of twoand three-dimensional design through demonstrations , lectures and discussions . We visit local thrift shops to source our materials . Students have the experience of working with a variety of materials and techniques . Group discussions are an important aspect of the workshop .
FACULTY : Arthur Simms is an associate professor of art and runs the art program at LaGuardia Community College , a CUNY school in New York City . He has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants , including the Rome Prize , Guggenheim , Tiffany , Creative Capital , Joan Mitchell , Pollock-Krasner and American Academy of Arts and Letters . Exhibiting nationally and internationally , Arthur represented the country of Jamaica in the 49th Venice Biennial .

Welding & the Digital World : the CNC plasma cutter Alicia Eggert
O
CONCEPT : Explore the art of steel sculpture by combining manual and digital fabrication tools and techniques in this introductory workshop . We start by learning how to 3-D scan an object and use computer software to slice the objects into 2-D shapes that can be cut out of steel on a CNC plasma cutter . We then manipulate and weld those steel parts together to create a dynamic three-dimensional form . Faculty provides technical demonstrations and fabrication assistance , and guides participants through the creative process from ideation to the completion of a sculpture or installation .
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES : Participants use a 3-D scanner and computer software to create and slice a digital model . We also learn how to operate a CNC plasma cutter to cut designs out of steel . We then learn how to MIG weld , form and assemble those steel pieces to create a finished sculpture .
ACTIVITIES : Each of the first three days begins with technical demonstrations in the morning , followed by time in the afternoon for participants to get hands-on experience using the tools with one-on-one technical assistance from the faculty . The last two days are reserved for finishing and installing participants ’ individual projects .
FACULTY : Alicia Eggert is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on the relationship between language , image and time . She is currently an assistant professor of studio art and the Sculpture Program Coordinator at the University of North Texas in Denton .
