woodturning
Anderson Ranch’s incredible legacy runs deep in our woodturning department, which
was established by one of the legends of the craft. David Ellsworth founded the program
in 1974, and students are incredibly fortunate to continue to learn from this iconic
innovator and author today. This summer, David will teach two workshops, allowing
artists interested in woodturning to master a progression of skills in two weeks.
The Pryor Turning Studio, an annex of the Maloof Wood Barn, is outfitted with nine
workstations, each equipped with a lathe and set of woodturning tools, faceplates and
jaw chucks.
Small class sizes foster a close-knit community with a focus on one-on-one instruction.
Advance your skills and expand your creative imagination in a woodturning experience
that unites an exciting learning environment with extraordinary faculty.

O
Take the first steps to becoming a
woodturning master during this five-day comprehensive
exploration of bowl and hollow form turning. Start at
the beginning working directly from the timber log.
Students uncover the essentials of this engaging art
form under the guidance of the instructor’s signature
gouge, hollowing techniques, work methods and
philosophy. We explore topics such as reading bowl
forms within the log, orientating grain patterns within
the bowl forms, and learning how to turn with maximum
versatility and efficiency while minimizing sanding. We
cover tool design and sharpening using a variety of
chucking systems such as jam and vacuum chucks and
the subtle, and not so subtle, elements of object design.
MEDIA & TECHNIQUES: Participants learn how to
turn open bowls and hollow forms from green logs while
using the lathe as a power carving tool. We explore all
of the methods of orienting grain, mounting, cutting,
sanding and finishing.
ACTIVITIES: This workshop begins with a
comprehensive demonstration on turning an open bowl
from half a log. There are demonstrations throughout
the week, which explore different aspects of the
making process.
FACULTY: David Ellsworth’s work is included in the
permanent collections of 41 museums and numerous
private collections worldwide. He is a Fellow and former
Trustee of the American Craft Council and has received
fellowship awards from the National Endowment for
the Arts, the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts and the
PEW Fellowship for the Arts.
